It wasn't Johnson Grass

I've been moving away from using a rotary tiller on my garden, and I use it less and less. But, I recently tilled an area, for lack of a better option. Upon surveying that patch of soil several days later, I was depressed because I saw several patches of what appeared to be Johnson Grass that had popped up. I thought I had chopped and spread a bunch of the grass rhizomes with the tiller.

I headed in to the garden today, armed with fork and shovel, to dig out and destroy all the Johnson Grass that I could. I was so relieved and thrilled :D when I started digging and realized that it was only CORN that had sprouted from some discarded ears that had been left in the garden... corn seedlings and the baby shoots of Johnson Grass look virtualy identical.

Now that's a lot better than Johnson Grass. At least you can eat corn. Don't you just love volunteers. I have several zucchini in my compost pile right now and I'll leave them there to see if the dreaded Squash Vine Borers take them too since I've had very little success with squash this year.
