Wisteria Questions?

Do full size wisteria always require a trellis or an arbor to hold them up or do people do that because the tree lends itself well to this style. I would have to believe that they survive well enough in nature without that stuff so the tree once it has a several inch trunk diameter I would have to believe it was safe for it to grow without supports. Are wisteria prone to splitting and losing braches if support is not in the scenario. I guess my best teacher would be more research into how they grow in nature, but I appreciate any commentary given on this subject thanks

hi Matt,
Wisteria's are climbing plants so yes they do need some structure to cling to that is if you let them climb but they can be kept as standards and then will not require any support because their trunks will be strong enough to hold them.
