Hey guys,
I'm almost done getting my little front yard garden up running for this spring. Colorado weather is nuts and we're still getting occasional snow storms. So in the mean time I'm getting my garden beds in order.
My question is, I found a bag of organic blood meal in my grandmothers back yard the other day. It wasnt covered and looks like snow melt and other water has gotten in it. Does blood meal go bad? also I poured it out into a new container and it reeks of ammonia, is that normal or has it gone sour? Please help!
Thanks in advance guys!

Blood meal is dried blood, so it can certainly spoil especially when allowed to get wet. If it smells like ammonia, I don't know exactly what process would have resulted in it (including some animal urinating on it). But I would suppose that it is still a source of highly concentrated nitrogen.
I imagine it should be diluted quite a bit "dissolved" in water or mixed/tilled in small amounts into soil
Is it safe to use on food crops? Not sure. Hope someone else knows the answer.
